NSSF Aids Bududa Landslide victims

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has donated UGX 10 million towards relief efforts for the landslide victims in eastern Uganda. The donation has been made through the Uganda Red Cross Society and was handed over at NSSF Offices in Workers House, Kampala on 10th March 2010.

Announcing the donation, the NSSF Ag. Managing Director Mr. Grace Isabirye, expressed grief at the unfortunate tragedy which led to deaths of many innocent people. He extended sympathies to the affected families, adding that “as we mourn the demise of our dear ones, we believe our contribution will make a difference in the lives of the displaced people. “

“We have identified areas in which we shall intervene and respond to disasters like these ones. We have a Corporate Social Responsibility Plan that guides us in promoting the social and environmental well being of communities in which we operate,” Isabirye said.

In addition to the above contribution, NSSF Staff across the country are collecting materials such as clothes, food items and other household and basic items that will also be handed over to the landslide victims through Uganda Red Cross Society.

The Ag. MD further said that NSSF is making the donation through the Uganda Red Cross so that it can benefit the people in need. “We know the Uganda Red Cross as one of the credible humanitarian organisations that are working in the very communities that need help and can identify where the greatest need is,” he said.

Mr. Isabirye later handed over a cheque to the Uganda Red Cross Society Secretary General Mr. Michael Nataka.

‘’The money will be used to procure kits containing relief items such as tarpaulins, water purification tabs, blankets, plates, saucepans, and cups which will be distributed to people affected by the recent landslides in Eastern Uganda’’, Mr. Nataka said. He lauded NSSF’s contribution, saying it had come at the right time. He added that, once the items have been purchased, NSSF will officially hand over these items to the victims in Bududa District.
He encouraged more companies and individuals to support with whatever little they can; adding that every contribution will make a difference in the lives of the affected persons.

Also in attendance was Mr. Lawrence Lutaya Head of Resource Mobilisation, Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (URCS) and Mr. Charles Muhoozi, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, NSSF.

NSSF has been involved in various Corporate Social Responsibility activities which include, donating to Teso Flood Victims in 2007, sponsoring Blood Donation drives, painting Zebra crossing, supporting the HIV/AIDS children, donation to the Breast cancer institute in Mulago, IDP returnees among others.
